Magnesium is involved in more than 300 reactions in your body: making energy in your cells, relaxing your muscles, calming your nervous system, and regulating blood sugar and blood pressure. Almost nothing runs without it.
And yet it's remarkably easy to fall short. Modern farming has reduced the magnesium content of vegetables and grains compared to a few generations ago, refining strips out more, and everyday habits like coffee, alcohol and stress all quietly increase how much you lose.

Six reasons levels run low
- Modern soil and food processing. Intensive farming has reduced the magnesium content of vegetables and grains, and refining strips out even more from white flour and rice.
- Chronic stress. Stress hormones increase how much magnesium you excrete, creating a cycle where stress drains the very mineral that helps you cope with it.
- Caffeine and alcohol. Both increase magnesium loss through the kidneys, part of why a daily coffee-and-wine routine can quietly deplete reserves.
- Intense or frequent exercise. Sweat and muscle activity burn through magnesium faster, raising needs for anyone training regularly.

Not all magnesium is the same
Magnesium supplements come bound to different compounds, and the form changes what it's best suited for.
- Magnesium threonate. The one that reaches your brain. Its unique ability to cross the blood-brain barrier makes it a popular choice for focus, memory and sleep quality.
- Magnesium bisglycinate (glycinate). The one for muscles and sleep. Bound to glycine, it's gentle on the stomach and among the best absorbed forms, often chosen for cramps, restless legs and winding down in the evening.
- Magnesium citrate. The everyday all-rounder. Well absorbed and widely available, though larger doses can have a mild laxative effect.
- Magnesium malate. For energy and muscle aches. Paired with malic acid, it's often used for fatigue and muscle soreness.
- Magnesium taurate. The one for your heart. Combined with taurine, it's typically chosen to support cardiovascular health and steady blood pressure.
- Magnesium oxide. Best left on the shelf as a daily supplement. It's cheap and common, but poorly absorbed, and its main real use is as a short term laxative rather than a way to rebuild levels.
What actually helps
Magnesium responds well to small, consistent habits rather than one big fix. A few starting points:
- Don't rely on a standard blood test alone. If you want a more accurate picture, ask about an RBC (red blood cell) magnesium test rather than serum.
- Eat magnesium-rich foods daily. Pumpkin seeds, almonds, spinach and dark chocolate can meaningfully move the needle when eaten regularly, not just occasionally.
- Match the form to the goal. Glycinate or threonate in the evening for calm and sleep, citrate or malate earlier in the day for absorption and energy.
- Mind what drains it. Cutting back on caffeine and alcohol, and building in real recovery after intense exercise, both help reserves last longer.
